The honest range
Kitchen remodels in Southeast Massachusetts run $12,000 on the low end to $75,000 on the high end. That range is wide because "kitchen remodel" can mean anything from "swap the counters and paint the cabinets" to "tear out the wall, move the gas line, install custom cabinets and quartz, redo the floor, replace every appliance."
If you ignore everything else in this post, remember three numbers:
- Refresh ($12K–$25K), same layout, new finishes. Cabinet refacing or paint, new counters, new tile, new lighting, new appliances. 2–4 weeks of work.
- Mid-range ($25K–$45K), same footprint, new everything. New cabinets, quartz tops, full tile backsplash, new floor, new appliances. 4–8 weeks.
- Full ($45K–$75K+), layout changes, cabinetry upgrades, structural work, premium finishes. 8–14 weeks.
What actually drives the cost
Most homeowners assume the materials drive the cost. They contribute, but the bigger drivers are the things you can't see in a finished photo.
Cabinets (35–45% of total)
The single largest line item. Stock cabinets ($150–$250/linear foot installed) are fine. Semi-custom ($250–$450/linear foot) is the sweet spot for most kitchens. Custom ($500–$1,000/linear foot) is for unusual layouts or specific finishes you can't get off the shelf.
Counters (8–15%)
Quartz at $60–$110/sqft installed. Granite $50–$120. Butcher block $35–$70. Slab choice and slab quantity matter, a complex layout with a peninsula and waterfall edge uses more slab and produces more waste.
Layout changes (often $5K–$15K extra)
Moving plumbing supply lines and drains. Relocating gas. Removing a load-bearing wall, that's framing, engineering, structural beam, drywall repair, refinish. Big cost, but often the single change that makes the kitchen actually work.
Electrical (varies)
A new kitchen typically needs at least one new circuit. Often three or four. Under-cabinet lighting, island outlets, refrigerator on its own circuit, dishwasher on its own. Plan for $1,500–$4,500 in electrical alone.
Tile and flooring
Floor: $7–$15/sqft installed for tile or LVP, $9–$14 for hardwood. Backsplash: $20–$45/sqft installed depending on tile pattern.
Where to save (and where not to)
Save on: appliances (the cheap fridge and the expensive fridge keep food at the same temperature), faucet finishes (matte black and brushed gold cost the same), drawer pulls.
Don't save on: cabinet construction (look for solid wood frames, dovetail drawers, soft-close hardware), counter material in heavy-use areas, the install crew. A great installer with cheap cabinets beats a sloppy installer with expensive ones every time.
What we'd quote you
For an average 12x14 ft Taunton kitchen. No layout change, semi-custom cabinets. Quartz tops. Full tile backsplash, LVP floor, new lighting and outlets, and standard appliances we coordinate from the manufacturer:
$32,000 – $42,000 all in. 5–7 weeks from demo to handoff.
